Young Men Will Soon Be Automatically Registered For US Military Draft – Here’s What This Means

The U.S. government is moving toward automatic Selective Service registration for eligible young men, with implementation planned by December 2026. Under the change, the government — not the individual — will handle registration using federal data sources.

This does not mean a military draft is starting. It means eligible men ages 18 to 25, who are already generally required by law to register, will no longer need to sign up on their own.

Right now, failing to register can carry serious penalties. The new system is meant to simplify the process and improve compliance, especially as registration rates have slipped in recent years.

Even with tensions rising in the Middle East, a draft would still require Congress to pass a law and the president to approve it before anyone could actually be called up. Registration only places someone in the pool if a future draft is ever authorized.

For now, the biggest change is practical: young men who qualify will be entered into the system automatically, rather than having to do it themselves.
