A former state assemblyman tragically died in a two-vehicle crash in Newark early Sunday morning. Albert Coutinho, 56, of the Ironbound neighborhood, was involved in a collision at the intersection of McCarter Highway and South Street. Authorities said police were called to the scene at approximately 7:29 a.m., and Coutinho went into cardiac arrest before being transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 8 a.m. The other driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Coutinho, a Portuguese American and longtime Democrat, served in the New Jersey General Assembly for more than five years. He initially took office in May 1997, filling the remainder of Jackie Mattison’s term, and went on to win elections in 2007, 2009, and 2011. His public service extended beyond the assembly, including roles on the Newark Central Planning Board, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, and as a commissioner for the Essex County Utilities Authority.
In 2013, Coutinho resigned from the assembly following a guilty plea for theft involving his family’s charity and a heart attack. Outside of politics, he was active in the family business, Coutinho’s Bakery, and held leadership roles in other companies, maintaining strong ties to his community throughout his life.
News of his passing prompted an outpouring of condolences and reflections on his impact. Former Governor Phil Murphy and his wife, Tammy Murphy, expressed deep sorrow, highlighting Coutinho’s generosity and dedication to the Portuguese American community. The Murphys noted his efforts to expand youth access to soccer, recalling personal memories of watching the FIFA Club World Cup together.
Community members also paid tribute to Coutinho’s influence locally. A Newark blogger emphasized his support for small businesses and his enthusiasm for community events, including the annual Newark Portugal Day Festival. His involvement went beyond public office, creating lasting connections and fostering civic pride in the Ironbound neighborhood.
Newark Councilman Michael Silva described Coutinho as both a mentor and a friend. Silva praised his ability to tackle complex challenges with integrity while highlighting the compassion and encouragement he extended to those around him. “He will live on in our memories and in every moment we choose to lead with strength, wisdom, and kindness—just as he taught us,” Silva said.
