Woman Taken While Swimming Alone in Open Water

For anyone haunted by Jaws, a real-life shark encounter off New South Wales is pure nightmare material.

During a routine swim, 63-year-old Christine Armstrong was reportedly killed and consumed by a 13-foot shark, leaving her friends and community in shock.

Christine, an experienced swimmer, had set out with her regular group but turned back early, saying she wasn’t feeling well—moments later, she vanished.

Moments after she left, signs of a predator appeared. Birds circled and a fin was spotted, but by the time the group returned, Christine was gone, and her remains washed ashore the next day.

Her husband described the attack as instantaneous, while the Tathra Surf Club honored her dedication and spirit, emphasizing the joy and friendships swimming had brought her.

Though rare, shark attacks in Australia remain deeply traumatic. Christine’s story is a somber reminder of the ocean’s unpredictability and the courage of those who face it daily.
